Thanksgiving 2011!!!

Will finding the "secret" compartment in our steamer. I had to remove all of the attachments to keep him from hiding them in new places. He loves to move things around. Which is really funny until you realize you don't have a brush. . .

Wow, what a day. First, I woke up early (thank goodness) to get the turkey rolling. However, when I opened the turkey it was ROTTEN!!!! Yep, super gross normally, but nearly catastrophic for a pregnant lady. After thinking up a few choice words for the people at Trader Joe's, from where I bought the turkey, Jason was dispatched to return the turkey and see if our local farmer's market was selling truly FRESH turkeys. Fortunately, for our Thanksgiving celebrations, there were some fresh turkeys that had not been picked up and Jason came home the hero. After the two hour delay I got things moving and it actually turned out to be the best turkey I've ever made, maybe even ever had. It was amazing and the gravy was even better!

As soon as the turkey was in the oven and I was ready to move on to some of the sides Will decided it was time to slice his finger. I have no idea how he did it but he did it thoroughly. There was blood everywhere. I first noticed it because it was all over the oven. When I looked at Will his hand was dripping blood. It took a while to find the cut because he was bleeding so much and he was not interested in having his hands touched. Once we got it clean we debated taking him to the emergency room for stitches and canceling our plans with our friends. He was also popping a molar and that alone was enough to cause a great deal of misery. I finally got enough of a good look at it to determine he hadn't cut through the fatty layer and stitches would not be necessary if we could stop the bleeding. We were able to get the bleeding to cease and I cuddled Will at which point he was so exhausted from his misery he passed out into a very solid sleep; a relief to all of us.

While he was sleeping I managed to finish the turkey, make the gravy, carve the turkey and do the dishes all at the same time, by myself, so we would be ready to leave on time to get to our friend's house. (I was amazed at myself. Jason was unable to help because he needed to work and when he finished even he was surprised there was nothing for him to do.) I packed up the turkey, gravy, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, etc. and Will chose that moment to wake up and we rushed out and were only 30 minutes late for dinner. However, since we brought most of dinner, and they are VERY good friends, they waited for us;). My friend Katie made the most AMAZING rolls, the mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie for dessert. She also dressed a beautiful table. It turned out to be a wonderful dinner and the boys (we both have little guys about the same age) had a great time playing together. Apparently, other kids are the best distraction for teething pain. We called my parents and used my cell phone and my brother Matt's to face-to-face chat with the family. Will is hilarious to watch and as he's not much for chit-chat it's the best way to spend time with him at a distance. I LOVE technology!

So all in all, it was a true family holiday. Rotten turkey, blood, and crying followed by an excellent meal. Sounds like we did it right to me!
